What are we Learning?

Thursday 23rd October 2025

In Maths, we have continued to concentrate on the subtraction of 3-digit numbers using the formal written method. We have practised subtracting two numbers across a ten (e.g. 642 – 427) before learning to subtract two numbers across a hundred (e.g. 836 -261).

In English, we have referred to our plans while writing their own short stories based on ‘Stone Age Boy.’

In Science, we have looked at different animal diets. We have created a fact file on animal nutrition.

Friday 17th October 2025

In Maths, we have continued to focus on the addition of 3-digit numbers using formal written methods. We have worked hard to exchange when adding even when this proved challenging at times.

In English, our learning has continued to focus on the picture book, Stone Age Boy. We have ended the week by planning our own stories about a child who travels back in time to the Stone Age. Next week, we will be referring to our plans while writing our own short stories.

On Thursday morning, we joined other local schools, taking part in a skipping rope festival. We enjoyed participating in the different activities while developing our skipping skills further.

Friday 10th October 2025

In English, our learning has moved on to focus on the picture book, Stone Age Boy. We have used descriptive detail to describe the Stone Age camp that the boy encountered. We also tried hard to use a thesaurus to strengthen our word choices.

In Maths, our learning has moved on to focus on addition and subtraction. We have used place value boards and counters while adding ones, tens and hundreds to 3-digit numbers.

In Science, we have concluded our learning on Rocks and Soils and have moved onto investigating Animals including Humans.

Friday 3rd October 2025

In English, our learning has continued to focus on the picture book, Ug. This week, we have investigated the purpose of speech bubbles within a comic strip as well as the correct use of speech punctuation using inverted commas.

In Maths, our learning has moved on to focus on addition and subtraction. We used place value boards and counters while adding ones, tens and hundreds to 3-digit numbers.

In DT, we continued our work on our Iron Age Roundhouses and constructed the roof.

Friday 26th September 2025

In English, our learning has moved on to focus on the picture book, Ug. We compared our lives with the life of the fictional character, Ug. We also wrote letters to Ug in order to describe our way of life in the 21st Century.

In Maths, we have concluded our learning by focusing on place value. We have used our knowledge of the 5-times table in order to count in steps of 50.

In History, we focused on the monument of Stonehenge. Having discovered how Stonehenge was built, we children worked collaboratively to create models of the monument using building blocks or Lego. 

Friday 19th September 2025

In English, we have continued to focus on the picture book, ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth.’ We have identified imperative verbs, prepositions and the features of instructional texts. We have also written our own set of instructions for washing a woolly mammoth.

In Maths, we have continued to learn about place value. We have concentrated on partitioning numbers to 1,000, including using flexible partitioning.

We have also had the opportunity to take part in a skipping workshop with the Skipping Ninja!

Friday 12th September 2025

Welcome to Year 3!

We have had a fantastic start to the year and everyone has settled into Year 3 beautifully.

In English, we have been focusing on ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth.’ We have practised using imperative verbs in our writing, in preparation to write instructions.

In Maths, we have started our topic on place value. We have represented numbers to 100 and explored the number line to 100.

In Science, we have looked at rocks and how they are formed.
