Music
When planning and teaching music, we largely follow the Charanga Scheme which is in accordance with the Model Music Curriculum.
Within the academic year, children study music in units, as outlined in the overall curriculum framework overview. This allows children to enhance their musical knowledge and develop their musical skills through focused learning, throughout the duration of each unit. In addition to the class lessons, there is a weekly singing assembly.
Each year group has opportunities to develop engagement and enrichment through many activities including:
- A performance each year to parents (EYFS and KS1: Nativity, Years 3 and 4: Singing Extravaganza, Years 5 and 6: Summer Production).
- There is a school choir which has a focus on signed singing and who perform at various community events.
- Use of technology in the classroom (Years 5 and 6 explore units separate to Charanga, learning how to compose music using Garage Band on the iPads).
- They are shown, or use independently, resources from the internet and videos.
- Each year group takes part in a music/art day during the year based on a piece of music e.g. Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, The Nutcracker, Earth by Hans Zimmer.
- Instrumental lessons are included in addition to the Charanga scheme: Recorders and Djembe drums taught by class teachers and whole class cornet lessons taught by a visiting tutor.
- There is the opportunity to have private piano lessons from a private tutor within school.
- Every 2 years, children from Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to take part in the Young Voices concert at the O2.
For additional music opportunities outside of school, please contact the Buckinghamshire Music Trust which is based in Aylesbury.
